ISO37000 – Governance of Organisations

ISO37000 is the international Standard for enhanced governance of organisations. It is the first internationally recognised ISO Standard on this topic. In the UK BS13500 was previously used for improving good governance outcomes.

The Standard is set out in a different format to the high-level structure and can be utilised by any organisation embarking upon a programme of enhanced governance.

At the beginning of the Standard focus is paid to governance integration, delegation, management, sustainability and stakeholder needs.

Following on from the above the Standard looks at the good principles of governance. These are set out as follows:

  • Purpose
  • Value generation
  • Strategy
  • Oversight
  • Accountability
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Leadership
  • Data and decisions
  • Risk
  • Social responsibility
  • Viability and performance over time

The Standard is a guidance document only and is not structured as a specification.

To obtain the best results from ISO37000 it is recommended that ISO37004 – Governance maturity model is adopted. This will help an organisation to understand its present position with regards its governance arrangements and to plan improvement strategies.
