For the BS13500 Governance programme to operate effectively, the executive team and the CEO must demonstrate the required leadership for governance to blossom within the organisation.

This is never easy, as in many organisations there are competing programmes that require the attention of the CEO and the board – all equally important.

It is helpful to ensure that all senior managers are signed up to this programme. Dissenters need to come forward as soon as possible!

The author often gets asked what appropriate attributes of good governance leadership are. These might include demonstrating ethical behaviour in a challenging circumstance when an easier or most cost-effective solution was available. Or rejection of some potential business due to misgivings about a customer or supplier can be clear indicators to staff members of acceptable values and codes.

Recognizing good governance attributes and deeds in subordinates is another way to enhance the governance culture.

By regularly communicating the importance of the governance culture at all relevant meetings and staff communiques.

Gaining feedback from staff members on their understanding of the commitment by the organisation to corporate governance. This will often provide an unvarnished picture of reality within the business.
