For an effective compliance management system, the framework should integrate all the required policies, processes, procedures and work instructions into an easy to use and understandable framework.
A key feature in the author’s view is accessibility and relevance to the organisation. Many compliance systems are unwieldy and appear irrelevant to users. When this occurs essential ‘buy-in’ does not occur.
The system should be developed to ensure processes are followed. But in addition, softer areas such as culture and tone are highly desirable outcomes. Indeed, many organisations must address regulatory models to address consumer vulnerability. Such outcomes don’toccur through rigid processes.
The system could be a web-based portal or a simple set of documents housed locally on a network. Visibility is key.
The system should underpin the organisation’s espoused values and beliefs.
Whatever method works best the compliance system should promote good governance, transparency, accountability and above all value to users and stakeholders.
An organisation may already hold ISO9001. By using ISO37301 systems and controls can be enhanced to demonstrate that best practice has been created in establishing the compliance arrangements and desired outcomes.
