ISO 42001 requires the documentation of the societal impacts of AI systems created by the organisation.
The Standard makes clear that AI development can have both positive and negative societal impacts.
Areas that an organisation should consider are detailed below:
- Environmental issues such as impacts upon natural resources and carbon emissions
- Economic issues such as employment rights, financial services, taxation requirements, trade issues and commercial trading needs
- Health and welfare including medical data management, possible psychological impacts of AI systems, treatments etc
- Government requirements including potential legislation, new regulatory bodies, national security issues
- Cultures and values. There is a need to consider the impact of AI systems on such biases and norms to ensure that no harm is incurred because of AI developments
