In any well-run organisation the stakeholders, those with an interest in the organisation’s well-being expect the entity to be well governed.

To be a well-run organisation, there needs to be adoption of good governance frameworks that cover all jurisdictions. Hence the need for an over-arching recognised ISO Standard such as ISO 37000.

The Standard defines good governance conditions in sound principles and advocates good practices that can help an organisation fulfil their roles and responsibilities to meet the expectations of external stakeholders.

The guidance Standard ISO 37000 assists an organisation’s leadership team to oversee and direct an organisation. It is also intended for stakeholders involved in the support and fulfilment of an organisation’s purpose.

Actual governance should be seen as a ‘human based’ activity by which an enterprise is directed and ultimately held accountable for achieving its defined purpose and aims.

As a minimum the organisation must:

  • Set and communicate organisational purpose and values clearly
  • Determine the approach to value creation
  • Direct and engage positive corporate strategies
  • Ensuring the organisation operates in accordance with values set out by the senior management body
  • Clearly demonstrate accountability for the performance and results over time
